इस प्रश्न का उत्तर हम सरल गणित की सहायता से पा सकतेहैं। मानलें कि पृथ्वी के गुरुत्वीय बल F के प्रभाव से गिरती हुई किसी वस्तु का द्रव्यमान m है और उसका त्वरण । न्यूटन के गति के द्वितीय नियम अनुसार mf=F न्यूटन के गुरुत्वाकर्षण के नियम अनुसार F=GMm/R2 यहां M एवं R क्रमशः पृथ्वी का द्रव्यमान एवं गिरती वस्तु की पृथ्वी के केंद्र से दूरी है। इन दो समीकरणों से F को हटाकर हम पाते हैं

f=GM/R21 यह गुरुत्वीय त्वरण कहलाता है एवं वस्तु के द्रव्यमान पर निर्भर नहीं करता। इस कारण कम या अधिक द्रव्यमान वाली वस्तुओं का त्वरण एक सा ही होता है।
